Facebook is a social networking service owned and operated by Facebook, Inc. It was created by Mark Zuckerberg along with his college-mates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. Facebook membership was first opened for Harvard University students but later they expanded it to all colleges in the Boston, the Ivy League, and Stanford University, California and eventually to everyone aged 13 or above.
Facebook is the most used social networking service. It has changed the way we socialize with others and how we share what we have lived. Now Facebook has more than 900 million active users. Actual URL of Facebook profiles include a string of numbers like www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=5500932537. This number actually tells where you fall in the order of everyone who joined Facebook. The first three profiles on Facebook were made by Mark Zuckerberg and then he deleted those profiles. His present profile Mark Zuckerberg was actually the fourth profile on Facebook. That is why, if you go to www.facebook.com/4, you will be redirected to Mark Zuckerberg profile.

Facebook Inc. was found in mid-2004. After purchasing a domain, the company changed the name from Thefacebook to Facebook. Below is an image of Thefacebook in 2005.
Facebook provides more features than any other social networking site. You can friend someone, join groups, like a fan page, chat with friends and group-mates, write a note, subscribe to someone's public post, video call your friends and many more.
Although Facebook is widely used in all parts of the world and its fan include many prominent leaders of the world yet it has been blocked several times in different countries including the People's Republic of China, Iran, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Syria and Bangladesh on different bases. For example, it was banned in Pakistan for allowing blasphemous and religious discriminatory contents. It has also been banned at many workplaces to prevent employees from using it during work hours. Facebook was also heavily criticized for its privacy settings. In July 2011, German authorities discussed the possible prohibition of events organized on Facebook because of overcrowding by people not originally invited. In one such incident over 1600 "guests" attended the birthday party of a Hamburg girl when she accidentally posted her birthday event as public. To manage such a huge crowd, one hundred police officers were deployed at the party site. More than five policemen were injured and a number of participants were arrested for assault, property damage and resistance to authorities.
